Almirida, Chania Crete |
Situated 22 kilometers far from Chania, at the East, within a cove at the mouth of the Souda bay, Almyrida is a small beautiful village by the sea, with 133 permanent residents. Apart from the scenic beach with the tiny port, it is worth seeing the Palaeo-Christian basilica (6 th century), decorated with mosaic. 4 kilometers at the east there is Kokkino Horio (“Red Village”), a small inland village, where you can see the very interesting “galaries” (tunnels), constructed by the Germans, during the occupation of the island (1941-45), in order to protect the military port of Souda. The village has a manufacture of hand made glass, using the traditional technique of blowing. |

A local feast (“panighyri”) takes place in the village in honor of Aghios Georgios (St. George), on April 23 rd (or on Monday following the Easter). Almyrida is well equipped with hotels of all categories, studios and rooms to let. Good accommodation is also available at the nearby settlement of Plaka, 1 kilometer at the northeast. Eating is not a problem at the village; you will find several restaurants and taverns, as well as traditional cafes. Being a tourist resort Almyrida does offer opportunities for amusement; you may find some discos and bars. Access to the village is possible by public bus, running regularly and rented or private car and motorbike. |
