The fans of natural life should visit the Askyfou plateau and the broader area. It is a historic place, well known for the role that played during the various revolts of the Cretan people against the Ottoman domination.

It is a very scenic place among the peaks of the Lefka Ori (“White Mountains”), situated 50 kilometers far from Chania at the Southeast, on the road leading to Imbros.

There are four small villages at the plateau: Ammoudari, Goni, Kares and Petres with few permanent residents (they count approximately 440 people all together).

It is worth visiting the mountain hut at Tavri, 8 kilometers western to Ammoudari, at a height of 1200 m; the route is fascinating and the view breathtaking. Once in the area, don’t miss to visit the small plateaus of Tavri and Niatos.

It is also worth seeing the fort of Koules, near the village Goni, as well as the small War Museum, with weapons of various periods since 1770 and a small folk collection.
