Frangokastello Fort |
Situated 80 kilometers far from Chania at the Southern coast of Crete, this castle had been built by the Venetians, in order to supervise and guard the whole area and protect the population from the incursions of the pirates. As the castle was in use for a short time, both by the Venetians and the Ottomans who succeeded them, it had soon been abandoned. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Cretan people took the fort, which was almost destroyed later in 1828, after a siege. |
