Situated at the islet of Souda, opposite to the castle of Idzedin. The Venetians started to construct it in 1570 and as it was expanded, it comprised the whole of the islet. Before the construction of the Itzedin castle it was the only fort at the place, however it provided a pretty effective protection of the Souda port and of the town of Chania. It was given to the Ottomans in 1715. It is at this castle that on the 14 th of February 1913 that the Ottoman flag was lowered to give its place to the Greek one and thus signal the official incorporation of Crete to the Greek territory.
