Omalos plateau

A large, beautiful plateau on a height of 1.000 meters, at the west of the Lefka Ori and 38 kilometers at the Southeast of Chania, the Omalos plateau attracts the visitor in any season of the year. The place has a long history and is closely linked to the struggle of the Cretan people for their freedom. It is here that the fighters took to when pursued by the enemies, it is from here that the rebels started off and it is here that many battles were done; that is why Omalos very often mentioned in the traditional folk songs of Crete.

Several villages, caves, and defensive towers since the periods of fighting are found in the place and are worth seeing. But the most important is that here is the entrance of the famous Samaria gorge.

Access to the area is possible by public bus, the best means to use, especially if you plan to hike down the Samaria gorge, and by private car or motorbike.
