Falassarna, Chania Crete |
Situated 58 kilometers far from Chania, at the West, Falassarna is a small village by the sea with a long sandy beach, dunes and blue –greenish crystal clear water and with few permanent residents. It is worth seeing the ruins of the ancient Falassarna, the port of Polyrheneia. The city was destroyed by the Romans; ruins of various periods are visible, as traces of cyclopean walls, a stone carved throne and the ruins of a temple, possibly dedicated to Apollo or Artemis. |

A few Byzantine churches are worth seeing, the most interesting being the church dedicated to Aghios Fotis and Aghios Anikitos (meaning “Invincible”!), within a small cave with fascinating view, just off the village. Two local feasts (“panighyri”) take place on the 26 th of July on the feast of Aghia Paraskevi and on 12 th of August, in honor of Aghios Anikitos. Accommodation in hotels and rooms to let is available as well as food and drink at the taverns, restaurants and cafes of the area. Access is possible by public bus (few services), private and rented car and by taxi from Kastelli. |
