If you decide to take a drive around, you will find several small villages with Byzantine churches, some of them dating back to the 13 th century.
You will also find interesting landscapes and monuments of nature, as the caves Charakas and Zoures and the evergreen old plane tree at the village Azogouries, 8 kilometers at the Northeast of Palaeochora.
Although access is not very easy it is worth visiting to the cape Krios, with the homonymous lake, an unspoiled landscape of nature, keeping its natural beauty.
A series of cultural activities take place in early August (“Music August”).
In summer, the tourist agencies organise excursions to the Samaria gorge and to Elafonissos.
Being quite well organised to receive tourists, the village offers a wide range of accommodation facilities, including a camping. Cafes, taverns, restaurants and with local dishes and bars are available for food, drink and amusement.
Access is possible by public bus (5-6 daily), as well as by private and rented car.
Boats depart from Palaeochora for excursions to the southern coast; the village is regularly connected by boat with Chora Sfakion, Aghia Roumeli, Loutro, Sougia, Elafonissos and Gavdos. |
