Therissos, Chania Crete

Situated 16 kilometers far from Chania, at the South, Therissos is a small village with 110 permanent residents.

This mountainous village, built at the foot of the White Mountains is famous for its struggles against Ottoman domination. It is from here that Eleftherios Venizelos started the revolt of 1905 that led to the incorporation of Crete to Greece.

Therissos is worth visiting for the magnificent landscape. The road from Chania passes through an impressive gorge, by the river; driving there is a fascinating experience. At “Treis Ekklisies”, close to the entrance of the gorge you will see the old stone bridge, the “Kamara” as the natives call it.

If you like caves, don’t miss to visit the cave Sarakina or Elliniko, 2 kilometers north of the village. Traces of Neolithic, Minoan and Geometric period have been found there.

For a scenic drive, take the road to Zourva, 7,5 kilometers at the South of Therissos.

A local feast (“panighyri”) takes place on the 15 th of August, in honor of the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

A few rooms are available for accommodation if you decide to spend the night at the village. You will also find taverns and cafes.

Access to Therissos is possible by public bus, but the best way to visit the place is by private or rented car and motorbike.
