The village is very scenic, having maintained its traditional character, mainly due to the attentive restoration of old buildings. Up to now a series of buildings as the old wine-grocery, the cafe and the girls’ school have been restored; the latter has been transformed to a hostel. It is worth taking a drive to the villages around, at a distance of 1 to 7 kilometers from Vamos, as Xirosterni, Souri, Palailoni, Drapanos etc. There you will find some interesting churches and you will know the traditional architecture of the buildings, the hospitality and the way of life the Cretan people used to lead before the invasion of tourism; in those villages this way of life is still present today. If you are around in April you may attend the “Hochlidovradia” (the “snails’ eve”!). It is a traditional feast where snails (“chochlioi in the Cretan idiom), a beloved food of the Cretan people, cooked in various ways are offered to the guests, along with tsikoudia and plenty of music and dancing. |

Several cultural activities: music evenings, theatre and artistic exhibitions and exhibitions of handicrafts take place at the village in early August. A few hotels and rooms to let are available in Vamos and Kefalas, 4 kilometers at the east. You will also find some taverns and cafes to eat and drink. Access to Vamos is possible by public bus, running regularly and rented or private car and motorbike. The villages of the district are also connected with public bus, but ask for the hours of arrivals and departures. |
