Close to the inland towns, the beach is organised
well enough. The visitor will find accommodation facilities in hotels
and rooms to let at a short distance from the beach. A camping is available
at Pitsidia. Fish taverns offer good sea food. Apart from the marvellous
sea, you will also find swimming and sunbathing facilities (sunbeds,
umbrellas etc), as well as seasport facilities. One of the best features
of the beach are the tamarisk trees, at the very edge of the sea, offering
rich shade to the swimmers.
The northern end of the sea, close to Kalamaki, is not organised at all, remote
enough and nudism tolerant. The southern end is situated in front of the archaeological
site of Kommos, a very important Minoan settlement; access to the site is not
allowed to the public.
Access from Heraklion is possible by rented or private cars and motorbikes.
From Pitsidia you should take the road from Mires to Matala and turn
right to the dirt track; you will arrive to the beach after a 2 kilometres'
drive.
Kommos, beach southern
to the archaeological site
Situated at a distance of 66 kilometres far from Heraklion at the Southwest,
11 kilometres south western to Mires and 3,5 kilometres far from the
inland village of Pitsidia, the sandy beach of Kommos is continued at
the South of the archaeological site; this too, is found within the Messara
bay. The beach is very much affected by the strong winds blowing in the
area; however, the rocks at the end of the beach, stop the winds and
the sea there is somehow calmer.
