Koudoumas beach, Heraklion Crete

The remote beach of Koudoumas, a pebbly one, is situated at a distance of some 80 kilometres southern to Heraklion and 20 kilometres from the village of Sternes, at the South. The beach is in front of the Monastery of Koudoumas and it is well protected from the winds.

The beach is not organised at all; no facilities are available, apart from the crystal clear sea and the bright sun, and if you wish to stay enough you should bring supplies with you (especially water!). You may camp on the beach, provided you respect the Monastery and you don't disturb the few families of locals living there.

Access from Heraklion or Mires is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. The only way to the beach is from Sternes; it is a difficult dirt track, 20 kilometres long which descends from a height of 1.000 metres, on the Asterousia Mountain, to the level of the sea. The route is fascinating, the view breathtaking, but it is not recommended, if heights make you sick.
