Agios Nikolaos Sightseeing |
Once in the town, start your day with a coffee at the Lake (“Voulismeni” as it is commonly known), enjoying a beautiful view. In fact, the Lake looks more like a large well of a depth of 65 meters, than with a real lake. According to Mythology, it is at this place that took their bath the goddesses Athena (Minerva) and Artemis (Diana). |

After having relaxed with a good coffee you may start strolling around to know this beautiful town. You will see numerous churches, older and more recent, as the Byzantine church of Aghios Nicolaos, the church of Aghia Triada (Holy Trinity) and the church of Panaghia Vrefotrofos (Virgin Mary feeding Christ). You may also visit the Koundourios Municipal Library with very rich local archives, the El.Venizelos Square, where you will see the monument in honor of the soldiers who died during the wars from 1912 up to 1922, as well as the Archaeological and the Folk Museums. If you get tired of walking around you may follow the coastal road from the port to Kitroplatia, a very nice paved square, where you may have dinner in one of the taverns, enjoying the sea view. |

If you feel like wandering around, you may visit Almyros at a distance less than 2 kilometers southern to the town, a protected ecological park, with migrant birds; or, you may visit the village of Kritsa at a distance of 11 kilometers at the Southwest, where you will see several Byzantine churches, the ruins of the ancient city of Lato Etera and a marvelous natural environment. You can also catch the boat and sail to the small islet of Aghioi Pantes, where you will see the Cretan wild goats; however, the islet is accessible only on the name day of Aghioi Pantes, when the local feast (“panighyri”) takes place there. |
