Goudouras beach, Lassithi Crete |
The pebbly beach of Goudouras is situated in front of the homonymous settlement of 300 permanent residents, at a distance of 73 kilometers Southeastern to Aghios Nicolaos and 37 kilometers eastern to Ierapetra. It is the last village of the eastern part of southern Crete. The village has been named after the cape Goudouras (“Erythraion” in antiquity). “Goudouras” is a false pronunciation of the name of the plant “Agoudouros”, a plant used in the past for sweeping and as a floor for drying figs and grapes on it. |

The settlement is quite well organised with a sufficient number of stores, rooms to let and fish taverns for food and drink. It is pretty popular resort. Unfortunately, the port is not very good for mooring; a reconstruction has been already planned for the near future. The beach in front of the settlement is very good for swimming, unless it blows wind from the West. In such a case the beaches of Atherinolakos and Livari at the east are a good alternative. The settlement is found in an area full of greenhouses. Cultivation of vegetables is one of the main occupations of the locals. Access from Aghios Nicolaos, Ierapetra or Sitia is possible by rented or private care and motorbikes. |
