The beach is quiet enough, without big crowds, but also without the full swimming and sunbathing facilities of the well organised beaches of the northern or southern coast.
The wonderful sea view, the bright sun and the fascinating natural environment in the area are good reasons to spend some time here to investigate it. You may complete your relax near the sea with interesting excursions and visits to the archaeological sites with the ruins of Minoan settlements, or to the famous “Gorge of the Deads ”, or to the spring above the village of
Zakros, or to the cave of Pelekita . The visitors of the place in August may enjoy themselves in the local feast (“panighyri) that takes place on The 6 th of August, in honor of the Transfiguration of Christ.
Access from Aghios Nicolaos or Sitia is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. The village is 61 kilometers far from the Sitia airport and 97 kilometers far from the International airport of Heraklion. The beach is also connected with Sitia by public bus, with frequent service, running to Palaekastro,
Zakros and Vai and back to Sitia; the duration of the journey Sitia –
Zakros is some 1.30 hours. |
