Koutsounari is a big tourist resort at the Southern coast of Crete, situated at a distance of 42 kilometers far from Aghios Nicolaos at the Southeast and 7 kilometers eastern to Ierapetra. It is famous for the long and beautiful beach. The village counts some 600 permanent residents.

A very well organised resort, it offers a wide range of accommodation with hotels of all categories, studios, rooms to let and camping. The big hotels have conference halls, clubs and discos, as well as sport facilities. The beach is some kilometers long and very well organised. However, if you like a more natural environment, you may find some areas of the beach without facilities and big crowds.

And, if you are “bored” of the marvelous sea and the bright sun, you may leave on excursions in the area around; don’t miss to visit the old small churches scattered around, as well as the scenic traditional village of Aghios Ioannis, at a distance of 9 kilometers northern to Koutsounari and the village of Schinokapsala, some 16 kilometers at the Northeast; the route is fascinating and you will enjoy driving there.

A series of cultural activities are organised in July and August by the Cultural Center of Aghios Ioannis. And, if you like local feasts, don’t miss to attend the traditional “panighyri” in honor of the Assumption of Holy Virgin, on the 15 th of August.
