The name of Faneromeni (meaning “appeared”) has been given to the Monastery because of the icon of Virgin, found within a cave near the church. The church goes back to the 14 th century. The wall paintings preserved are dated to 1455; some of them are blackened due to a fire set once by the Ottomans. An old inscription shows that the Monastery had been restored in 1624. Access from Aghios Nicolaos or Sitia is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
