The Monastery of Faneromeni of Sitia is found at a distance of 8 kilometers far from Sitia at the West, close to the beaches of Platani and Aghioi Pantes, just beside the entrance of the gorge of Aghioi Pantes. A good cement-sealed road leads from the beach up to the Monastery.

The name of Faneromeni (meaning “appeared”) has been given to the Monastery because of the icon of Virgin, found within a cave near the church. The church goes back to the 14 th century. The wall paintings preserved are dated to 1455; some of them are blackened due to a fire set once by the Ottomans. An old inscription shows that the Monastery had been restored in 1624.
