The Holy Monastery of Vidiani is situated close to the Northwestern entrance of the Lassithi plateau, built within a stone cavity of the mountain Louloudaki. It has been established in the 19 th century, on the ruins of an old ruined church and it is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi (the “Spring of Life”).

The church and other main buildings of the Monastery were set to fire by the Ottomans in May 1867, during the revolt of Cretan people against the Ottoman domination. However, due to the high moral and the eagerness of the abbot and the monks it has been soon reconstructed. Considerable works of restoration and renovation of the monastery are being done in the last few years, whereas in the area of the Monastery it is planned to establish the Museum of Natural History.
