The Windmills

At the site of Seli Ambelou (“the Ambelos pass”), it is found the most interesting complex of windmills preserved in Crete. Situated at a distance of 52 kilometers eastern to Aghios Nicolaos and 3 kilometers western to Germiado, at the northern entrance to Lassithi plateau, the complex of windmills is the most characteristic feature in the area. Initially there were 26 of them, but today only 24 are preserved, 7 of them at the South of the road and the rest at the North.

The mills are of the askew type (“axetroharis” in the local idiom), that is to say they work only with wind from one direction. Nowadays, this type of windmill is found only in Crete and Karpathos, but those of Crete are better and more finely constructed. The mills were listed as works of art in 1986. All of them are private property and today, some of the owners are in the process of reconstructing them, whereas the rest are semi-ruined.

Access to the place from Aghios Nicolaos is possible only by rented or private car and motorbikes; there are also organised excursions by tourist buses at the place.
