The Gorge of Ziros - Xerokambos |
This gorge, starting at the Southeast of the village of Ziros and ending up at the beach of Xerokambos (103 kilometers southeastern to Aghios Nicolaos and 20 kilometers eastern to Ziros), is an almost unknown gorge of Eastern Crete. As walking it up is very tiring, you are recommended to walk it down. You will depart from the small plateau of Lamnoni, some 4 kilometers northeastern to the village of Ziros. As you walk down you will always have in front of you a wonderful view of Libyan sea and enjoy the wild beauty of a totally dry environment. The walls of the gorge are totally bare of vegetation and the whole route, of some two hours, passes through an extremely dry environment, maybe the driest of Eastern Crete; you will not see a single tree, only a few dry bushes. |

You don’t risk to miss your way, as the path is well distinct from the beginning to the end at the public road near the beach of Xerokambos. Of course, after a walking of 2 - 2,5 hours a swim at the beach of Xerokambos is the best you can do. The view of the sea from above, as you walk down the gorge will certainly attract you and give you the chance of taking marvelous photos. As you have to leave your car at the entrance of the gorge, you should have previously arranged that one person of the group drive it down at the exit. If you decide to visit the gorge, you are recommended to do that after October or before June, as in summer the heat is unbearable. Access from Aghios Nicolaos or Sitia is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
