Mirtos, Lassithi Crete |

Myrtos is a small, beautiful, peaceful village at the southern coast of Crete, close to the borders of Heraklion prefecture. It is situated at a distance of 54 kilometers southern to Aghios Nicolaos, 90 kilometers southeastern to Heraklion and 14,5 kilometers western to Ierapetra. It counts some more than 450 permanent residents. The visitor will find a few hotels and rooms to let for accommodation in the village, suitable for families or for those who prefer to have solitary holidays, but be close to the big tourist resorts and the places worth seeing. For food and drink the good fish taverns of the village are ideal; fish is always fresh and tasty. Swimming is possible at the beach in front of the settlement, a well enough organised sandy and in parts pebbly beach; or, you can drive or walk for 2 kilometers at the west, to the long beach near the village, where nudism is possible and snorkeling interesting and eventually fruitful enough. You may also choose to go eastwards to the beaches in the area of Ierapetra, at a distance from 3 to 14 kilometers far away. |

If you are interested in archaeological tours, don’t miss to visit the ruins of the important Early Minoan settlement (2600-2200 b.C.) at the site “Fournou Korfi” (3,5 kilometers to the East), the Middle Minoan farmhouse at the site of “Pyrgos”, western to Myrtos, and the ruins of the Roman baths, with the interesting mosaic pavements, at the site of Aghios Antonios, also western to Myrtos. If you feel like needing a “change”, from the everyday swimming and sunbathing program, you may leave for a short excursion to the mountainous village of Males, on a height of 600 meters, at a distance of 14 kilometers northern to Myrtos. You will see numerous interesting old churches, you will enjoy a tasty lunch and, if you wish, you may drive some more 9 kilometers westwards, to visit the holm-oak and pine wood at the village Selakano; the wood is of breathtaking natural beauty and it will offer you freshness in the hot summer days. In case of health problems, there is a Medical Center at Myrtos. Access from Aghios Nicolaos is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes, as well as by taxi from Ierapetra, which is close enough. |
