Sissi, Lassithi Crete

Sissi is a tourist resort with a small scenic port and sandy beach. It is situated at a distance of 26 kilometers northwestern to Aghios Nicolaos and 41 kilometers eastern to Heraklion. The village counts some 700 permanent residents.

If you choose Sissi for staying, you have several alternatives of sightseeing in the area. One of them is a visit to the scenic traditional village of Epano Sissi (meaning “upper Sissi”), some 1,5 kilometers at the East; here the visitor has the chance to see how dramatically different is a contemporary noisy tourist resort from a traditional village.

Just off the National Road, leading to Aghios Nicolaos, at a distance of 5 kilometers from Sissi southwards, there is the Monastery of Aghios Georgios (St. George) of Selinari, whose icon is said to be wonder working.

You may also visit the inland village of Vrahassi, 7 kilometers far from Sissi at the South, built amphitheatrically on the hillside on a height of 360 meters.

If you like to enrich your knowledge in ancient Crete, you may visit the archaeological site of Malia, at a distance of 5 kilometers western to Sissi and the cave of Milatos, some 5 kilometers at the East.

The village offers excellent accommodation facilities in hotels of all categories, rooms to let and camping, for those preferring to avoid the big hotels.

There are several taverns and restaurants with plenty and good food and drink.

You have a few beaches to choose from for swimming: you may swim at the small sandy beach in front of the settlement, as well as to the near by well-organised beaches of Boufos (a sandy beach) and Avlaki (pebbly). If you prefer something less organised, you may go to the small sandy beach Kalimera Kriti, where you will arrive after a five-minutes walk from Avlaki.

In case of health problems, there is a Medical Center at Vrahassi .

If you are in the area during the period of Easter, you may attend the local feast (“panighyri”) at the Monastery of Aghios Georgios (St. George) of Selinari, on the 23 rd of April, or on Monday after Easter.

Access from Aghios Nicolaos or from Heraklion is possible by public bus, running frequently, as well as by rented and private car and motorbikes. You may also take a taxi from Aghios Nicolaos, especially if you are 3-4 persons.
