Tholos or Kavousi beach, Lassithi Crete |
The pebbly beach of Tholos (or Kavoussi) is situated at a distance of 26 kilometers eastern to Aghios Nicolaos and 3,5 kilometers northern to the village of Kavoussi, which is found on the main road leading connecting Aghios Nicolaos with Sitia and Ierapetra. The beach is open to the North and not protected from the winds; a series of tamarisk trees on the beach offer their shade to the swimmers. |

Accommodation in hotels and rooms to let is possible at the nearby resort of Pachia Ammos (some 8,5 kilometers far away, at the South); a few rooms to let are available at the village of Kavoussi. Food is not a problem; apart from the taverns and restaurants at Pachia Ammos and the settlement of Kavoussi, there are also two fish taverns at the beach, where you may find fresh fish and seafood, drinks and refreshments. The beach offers some facilities for swimming and sunbathing (sunbeds and umbrellas), but, of course, the best shade is that of the tamarisk trees. The left end of the beach is better protected from the winds and the beach is sandy there. |

Apart from swimming, you may also go on excursions to the area around. The village of Kavoussi (3,5 kilometers far from the beach at the South), built at the foot of mountain Thrypti, within a small fertile valley with vegetable cultivation, vineyards and olive trees, is certainly worth seeing. Once in the village, you may visit the Byzantine churches of Aghios Georgios (St. George) and of the 12 Apostles. It is also worth seeing the huge perennial olive tree, with a trunk of an impressive diameter, within the valley at a distance of some 2 kilometers southeastern to the village ; it is certainly a natural monument, worth taking photos of it. If you are fan of archaeology, don’t miss to visit the Minoan settlements at the sites of “Vrontas” and “Kastro”; also you should go any way to see the Minoan copper mines at “Chryssokamino”. Also at the beach of Tholos you may see ruins of the Roman period, whereas an Early Minoan settlement is found on the small islet of Psira, opposite to the beach. The fans of natural sightseeing should visit the Messona gorge and the cave Theriospilio, with interesting stalagmites, close to “Chryssokamino”. Access from Aghios Nicolaos is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
