Panormos, Rethymnon Crete

Situated 22 kilometers far from Rethymnon, at the East, Panormos is a beautiful picturesque village by the sea, with approximately 900 permanent residents. The village is built at the place of the homonymous ancient town.

It is worth seeing the Basilica of Aghia Sophia, dating back to the Early Christian period (5 th century), brought to light by excavations carried out in 1948. It is the bigger church of the period in Crete.

An interesting Byzantine church, dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi ("the Source of Life") is found in the village of Prinos, some 12 kilometers at the West. The church has interesting paintings of the 13 th century, and it is built in a marvelous environment within a ravine.

At the same area you may visit the Monument in honor of the Deads of the World War II.

If you are an enthusiast of natural beauty, don't miss to visit the mouth of the river Geropotamos and the scenic beach, just on the junction with the National Road.

You may also visit the cape Chondrocavos at the Northeast of the village; you will see the lighthouse and enjoy an excellent view of the area.

Once at Panormos, it is worth visiting the picturesque villages of Skepasti, some 5 kilometers and Exantis some 11 kilometers far from Panormos at the East.

Some events and happenings take place during the Carnival in February and March.

A series of cultural activities take place in summer.

Three local feasts ("panighyri") take place in the village: on the Ascension Day, on the 24 th of August, in honor of St. John, and on the 6 th of December in honor of Aghios Nicolaos.

Accommodation of any kind and for all budgets is plenty; you will find hotels, studios and rooms to let. Food and drink is available in the restaurants and taverns of the village and the broader area. Swimming and sea sport activities are possible at the beaches of the village.

Access from Rethymnon is possible by public bus, with regular service, taxi and rented or private car and motorbike.
