The interesting cave of Aghios Antonios is situated 40 kilometers far from Rethymnon at the Southeast and some 8 kilometers from the village of Patsos.
It is open to visitors, mainly because of the archaeological interest it presents.
It has been used as a place of worship from the Late Minoan period up to the Roman era. Archaeological surveys have shown that Hermes Cranaeos was worshipped here, as it is evidenced by an inscription found in the cave. Within the cave there is also a small church dedicated to Aghios Antonios, the patron of the children. |
