Close to the village of Argyroupolis, some 21 kilometers far from Rethymnon at the Southwest, it is situated the archaeological site of ancient Lappa. The town was active since the Geometric period, but it flourished mostly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, as it is evidenced by its coins.
One of the most important finds one can see on the site is the excellent mosaic pavement. Excavations at the area are still going on and interesting finds as two statues of marble are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon. |
