The Lighthouse of Asrpopounta |
The lighthouse ofAspropounta is a nice white washed building, 11 meters tall, situated at an altitude of 58 meters and visible from a distance more than 17 nautical miles. It was constructed in 1919 and started operating a couple of years later, in 1921. Although called “Aspropounta Lighthouse”, it is in fact situated at the nearby site of “Kavos tou Michelou”. At the beginning, the lighthouse was lit by a wick, which later on was replaced by a petroleum gas mechanism. Since 1986 it operates with solar power. |

Beside the lighthouse it is found the building which in the past used to be the residence of the lighthouse keepers. Today, the two lighthouse keepers responsible for the lighthouse have only to check the mechanisms and care for their good condition. The visitors, who make the tour of the island by the excursion boat, pass close enough to the lighthouse and have the chance to see it better from afar and take photos of it. Access to the lighthouse is possible on foot, via the footpath from Livadaki (some 15 minutes walk), or from Ano Meria. |
