Originally, the island has only two villages: the town of Mykonos and Ano Mera; the rest of the settlements are in fact tourist resorts developed at the beaches with very few permanent residents in winter.

Mykonos Town (Chora)
The town of Mykonos, or Chora as it is called by the natives, is quite impressive, due to its characteristic traditional cycladic style; the visitor is fascinated not only on the first visit. The town has preserved its atmosphere despite the invasion of tourism and the quick developmet. Ano Mera
Situated 8,5 klm at the East of Chora (Mykonos town), nearly at the center of the island, Ano Mera is a beautiful traditional village built on a plateau, with circa 1350 permanent residents. The houses are built in the small, but rather fertile fields and gardens, with a good plan, having as center the historic, very well preserved monastery of Panaghia Trouliani, built in the 16th century.
