Kolimbithres beach, Paros Island |
The beach of Kolymbithres is situated at the northern part of the island, within the protected Bay of Naoussa and at the West of it. It is found at a distance of some 10 kilometers northeastern to the town of Paros (Paroikia). It is probably the most famous beach of the island and undoubtedly the most noteworthy. The rocks of granite surrounding it, carved by the water, by the sand and by the winds, form cavities and holes, which in the imagination of the locals are perceived as the fonts of the church; it is to this feature that the beach owes its name. |

Several alternatives for accommodation are available in the area around and you will also have many choices for food and drink at the sea front taverns of the area. Several bars and cafés at the sea front offer refreshment, drinks and coffee. Kolymbithres is a sandy beach with nice sand and crystal clear shallow sea which makes it suitable for families with small children. As the rocks divide it in separate small coves, it is always easy to find a spot not too crowded. Thus, although very popular, it still remains quiet enough, an additional pro to its natural beauty. It is well organized with sun beds, umbrellas and sea sport facilities. |

Although the beach itself is the most interesting sightseeing of the area, there are also several interesting places you can visit once in the area. If you are fan of antiquities, you may go to the nearby site of Koukounaries, where you may see the ruins of the Mycenaean acropolis of the 13th century b.C., surrounded by the so called “Cyclopean” walls, on a low hill above the beach. Later on, during the Geometric period (8th century b.C.), a settlement had been established at the same place. Apart from the ancient ruins, it is worth visiting the place for the nice view you will enjoy. From here you may take excellent photos for your holiday album. Finally, once at the beach you may see the small islet of Aghia Kali, with the small church dedicated to the Assumption of Jesus Christ, which you may also visit by private or rented boat. In case of any problem, you may address to the nearby town of Naoussa, some 3 kilometers far away to the East or to the capital Paroikia, some 10 kilometers at the Southwest. Access to the beach is easy from the town of Paros (Paroikia) by rented or private car and motorbikes. From Naoussa, you may also come to the beach by taxi, as well as by the excursion boats departing daily for the tour of the island and stop at Kolymbithres. |
