  Our Island

The island of Santorini Greece was called Strogili in Ancient times. Strogili means "circular" in Greek.

After a terrible eruption, the center of the island sank and only the crater was left above water and the impressive cliff of 150m to 300m height. On this cliff, one can see, as if perched in the sky, some of the most beautiful traditional white painted Cycladic villages. The villages of Santorini are made of typical white Cycladic houses with blue painted windows facing the black volcanic rock of the caldera: A spectacle that will inspire the romantic in you, especially viewed around the sunset considered as one of the most beautiful in the world

These villages are Fira, Firostefani, Immerovigli and Oia.

The name of Santorini comes from "Santa Irini" and it is officially called Thera. It is located at the south of the Cyclades Islands between Ios and Anafi. The island of Santorini covers an area of 96 km2 and has a coastline of 69 km. It has a population of 6500-7000 inhabitants during the winter time and reaches more than 11.000 during summer.

The most prominent characteristic of the island of Santorini is the submerged volcano. The first eruption of the volcano is dated to 1500 BC and many specialists contest that it could be responsible for the destruction of the infamous Minoan civilization. The last eruption dates to 1956 and the volcano is still active today.

It is also believed that the destruction of the island of Santorini could be related to the mythical lost Atlantis.
