Legal Civil Wedding
The following documents are required for a
worldwide legit civil wedding in Greece.
1) Bride's
and Groom's passport copies.
2) Marriage
License and Registration of marriage from your
town hall/county office, with the authenticated
translation in Greek.
3) "Certification of record
search" issued by the division of vital records
of your state, or county office, with an authenticated
translation in Greek. For the legalization/acceptance
of the Affidavit at the local Mayor's office,
there would be an additional cost of €50,00
for tax fees.
4) An affidavit of Single status
and no impediment to marry which is a document
issued from your country's consulate (or any
department of the foreign affairs office) and
insures that there is no adhesion to get married
in Greece, that your marriage is going to take
place in Santorini and the name of the person
that you'll be marrying.
5) Birth Certificates
for both and the authenticated translation
of them in Greek.
6) Divorce Certificate in
case that there is any with the authenticated
translation in Greek.
The couple should be
in with in Greece a total of eight days but
the ones that provide the Marriage license
they're not obligated to follow the specific
restriction
- All official documents purchased
from an American authority need to curry the
Apostil stamp.
- All of the official translations
need to be stamped either by the Greek Embassy,
or the nearest Greek consulate.
As soon as
you prepare the official translations, you
would have to send copies to us either by fax
or e-mail and twenty days prior the wedding
date we would have to receive (by mail in to
our address) the original documents along with
the translations. In return we will send you
a Wedding date confirmation issued by the Municipality
verifying that all documents are O.K.
The day
following the Wedding Ceremony, the couple
should pass by and sign the marriage records
of the Mayor's office and your marriage license
will be mailed to you the latest in seven days
after the ceremony.
Greek Orthodox Wedding
Required documents for performing a Greek
Orthodox wedding in Santorini
1) A marriage
license from a Greek Orthodox Church of the
region where you belong, (a certificate to
give consent and the freedom to marry). This
document is given in Greek is signed & stamped
from the Bishop of the local church and there
fore, there is no need for a translation.
2) For foreign citizens of a different religion,
a similar marriage license from your local
church stamped from the regional bishop, translated
in Greek and stamped by the Greek Consulate
or Embassy.
3) Birth certificates (official
documents along with the official translations).
4) Single status letter/ Letter of no impediment
(from your local register's office / town hall).
To be translated and authenticated.
5) Divorce
certificate if any (from the judge and from
the Cathedral) and the official translation
in Greek, stamped from the local Greek consulate
or the Greek Embassy.
6) Both bride & groom
have to sign a paper in a notary office that
their children will be baptized as Christian
Orthodox. This is something required only in
the case that one of the two would not be Christian
Orthodox.
7) A legal declaration which will
be signed here at the local church
All translations
must be stamped & authenticated by the
Greek Embassy or the nearest Greek consulate.
For U.S citizens, official documents need
to be escorted with the Apostile stamp.
Above
mentioned documents need to be obtained and
mailed to us at least one month before the
wedding date in order for us to be able to
confirm that everything will be in order for
the performance of the wedding. You
should keep in mind that all official documents
are only valid 90 days after the day of issue.
A day or two before the ceremony, the couple
should meet with the priest to review the paper
work and a day or two after the ceremony the
church will issue your wedding certificate.
Your wedding certificate will be an official
document stamped by the Greek Government and
once you receive it, you would have to translate
it in your native language and stamp it again
from the Greek consulate or Embassy and that
would be valid in your country so you could
declare your wedding in your home land.
Catholic Wedding
Obligatory documents necessary for a Catholic
Wedding in Santorini, Greece:
1) A Baptism Certificate.
This document should be requested and dated
close to your wedding date.
2) A Confirmation Certificate
3) A freedom to Marry Certificate.
This document is the assurance that you are
free from any canonical impediment for marriage.
a) These certificates must be obtained from
the parish priest in whom you were baptized
and must be dated within 3 months of your marriage.
b) If the date of your confirmation is not
written in the parish in which you were baptized,
you should ask for it in same parish in which
you were confirmed.
c) Take these certificates to your present
parish priest who should make the prenuptial
inquiries and catechetical instruction.
4) Written permission must
be obtained from your Bishop to have performed
out of your parish and here in Santorini. This
is according to Canon 1115 of the Codex Juris
Canonici. Please discuss with your pastor.
5) Certificate stating you
have completed the "PRE - CANA" instruction
class, retreat or meetings.
The above documents need to be sent to Santorini
at least 2 months prior to the day of your marriage
so that we are assured that all paperwork is
in order.
Do not forget to bring along all the original
documents.
All the above documents are necessary.
Renewal of Vows
Exchanging your Vows could be done in any way
you have in mind! There are no documents needed
and you can either exchange your own Vows or
simply contact us to give you some of our ideas.
