Artemonas, Sifnos Island

Artemonas is a village very close to Apollonia, situated at a distance of some 1,5 kilometers northern to the capital of the island and some 6 kilometers eastern to the port of Kamares. The settlement has been built at the place of the ancient temple of Artemis Ekvateria (Diana), which in antiquity was an important ritual place of Artemis. The actual name of the town recalls this tradition. Several important personalities of literature and of politics come from this village; among them we could mention the poet and interpreter Ioannis Gryparis and Nicolaos Chryssogelos, a hero of the Greek National Revolution of 1821. Today the settlement counts some 800 permanent residents living on tourism and agriculture.

Several alternatives for accommodation are available in the village and in the taverns of it you will have the chance to taste the famous local cooking.

Once at Artemonas it is worth visiting the lovely old house of the poet Ioannis Gryparis, as well as numerous mansions of neoclassic style with ample gardens and courtyards full of flowers. Also, the visitor may see several well preserved old churches. Two windmills nicely restored is what survives today from the numerous windmills of the past. When at the windmills you will have the chance of taking excellent photos and enjoy the nice view of the sea and the neighboring islands in the distance.

There are several opportunities for shopping in the village, but what you should not miss is to visit one of the numerous traditional pastry shops, with the gorgeous local sweets, a characteristic feature of Artemonas. Another characteristic feature of the village is the traditional pottery workshops, which still keep alive and develop an ancient art, more than 5 thousand years old.

On the last Sunday of the Carnival Artemonas celebrates the feast of Kyr-Vorias, an ancient feast going back to the remote past.
