Artemonas, Sifnos Island |
Artemonas is a village very close to Apollonia, situated at a distance of some 1,5 kilometers northern to the capital of the island and some 6 kilometers eastern to the port of Kamares. The settlement has been built at the place of the ancient temple of Artemis Ekvateria (Diana), which in antiquity was an important ritual place of Artemis. The actual name of the town recalls this tradition. Several important personalities of literature and of politics come from this village; among them we could mention the poet and interpreter Ioannis Gryparis and Nicolaos Chryssogelos, a hero of the Greek National Revolution of 1821. Today the settlement counts some 800 permanent residents living on tourism and agriculture. |
