It is worth seeing the famous church of Zoodochos Pege (Virgin Mary, the Spring of Life) built in the 19th century. The church has an excellent stone paved courtyard, a unique sample of the local folk art. The entire village is also a nice sample of traditional architecture and has been extensively studied by many scholars, mainly Germans, who deal with the local architectural heritage. The visitor should also see the neoclassic building of the former Elementary School which today houses the Music School of Sifnos. A bit eastwards to the settlement it is found the Holy Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Chrysostomos, dated in the 17th century; the monastery has housed the first school established in Sifnos. Finally, it is worth visiting the old and very scenic church of Panaghia tou Koukia or Myrtidiotissa, dedicated to Virgin Mary. The church, dated in the 17th century, is situated at a site full of olive trees, southern to the village. |
