Vathi, Sifnos Island |
The scenic coastal settlement of Vathy (meaning “deep” in Greek) is situated at the western coast of the island, some 11 kilometers far from Apollonia at the Southwest. In the past the place was accessible only by boat; the road to the settlement counts only a few years of existence. Vathy is a small settlement, counting only 50 permanent residents, but it is a very popular destination for tourists who choose it for relatively calm holidays. The locals have a long tradition in pottery. |

Accommodation facilities are available in the settlement and you will taste delicious local dishes at the cute sea front taverns. You will enjoy swimming at the cove in front of the settlement, which, as its name indicates, penetrates deep in the land and thus, the beach is well protected and the sea very nice. There are several stores for the necessary provisions and you will also find a traditional pottery workshop which continues the long tradition of Vathy which used to be famous for the ceramic vessels (“tsoukalia” as they are called by the locals) produced there and exported to Cyclades, to Crete and Athens, bur also to Cyprus and Egypt. |

Once at Vathy you may visit the twin church dedicated to Taxiarches and to the Annunciation of Virgin Mary. In fact, the actual church is the Catholicon of an old monastery of the area and it is situated just at the seaside. On your way to Vathy you will see the Holy Monastery of Fyrogia and the church of Aghios Andreas (St. Andrew), as well as several very old buildings found at the place of a prehistoric acropolis which kept settled until the Hellenistic period. Also you will see the Holy Monastery of Taxiarches of Mersine, a building of the 18th century. Three local religious feasts (“panighyri”) take place at Vathy, all of them in honor of Taxiarches: on the 12th of July, on the 6th of September and on the 8th of November on the name day of the Saints. |

For any problem the corresponding services of the capital Apollonia (11 kilometers far away to the Northeast) are available for you. Access to Vathy from Kamares and Apollonia is very easy: you can get there by taxi or by rented or private car and motorbikes. If you like walking you may come to Vathy from Katavati following the old foot path, partly stone paved, an excellent sample of the old network of footpaths which in the past was extended all over the island and made possible the communication between the settlements. From Kamares you may also come by boat, either private, or by the excursion boats that sail in summer. |
