Sa(n) Michalis, Syros Island |
Sa(n) Michalis, a false pronunciation for Saint Michael, is a small picturesque settlement, not very tourist, situated in the inland, at the northern part of the island, in the area called “Ano Mera” (“the upper part”) by the locals. The village is found some 11 kilometers northwestern to Hermoupolis and counts only a few permanent residents occupied in agriculture and stockbreeding. The place is well known to the gourmets from the homonymous hard yellow cheese it produces. |

No facilities for accommodation are available in the settlement, but the nice architecture and the scenic taverns make it a pole of attraction for many visitors who come here to stroll around in the narrow stone paved streets, looking for an old church as that of Sa(n) Michalis, or for a gorgeous meal from the local kitchen, in the hospitable taverns. Once in the village, it is worth wandering in the area around to see the cave of Mendonis, the “Aerolithos”, a huge rock, the spring of Syringa and the wind generators that supply the island with electric power. |

For swimming you may go to three beaches, close enough to the village, which you will reach only on foot, via the corresponding footpaths. The beaches are Lia (at a distance of 35-40 minutes walking), Marmari (some half an hour of walking) and Grammata (more than an hour of walking). In case of any problem you should return to Hermoupolis some 11 kilometers far away to the Southeast. Access to the village is possible by bus, by taxi and by private means (car or motorbikes). |
