Kardamena, Kos Island

The town of Kardamena is in fact a modern tourist resort, at a distance of 29 kilometers Southwestern to the capital town of Kos. The houses and other constructions have been built along the long beach extended at both sides of the settlement. The area around is very beautiful, full of cultivations, trees and green and the natural beauty is one of the attractions of the place. The town has also a small port, from where there is connection with the small island of Nisyros. The population of the town is some 1800 permanent residents.

Once at Kardamena don't miss to see the old restored building, now housing the local Medical Center and visit the churches of Aghia Varvara (Santa Barbara), Aghioi Anargyroi and the church dedicated to Virgin Mary.

The modern settlement has been built in the area of the ancient city of Alassarna, an important ritual place in Classical Period. Archaeological excavations have brought to light the ruins of a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo and Hercules, some traces of a temple of marble dating back to the 3rd century b.C., an theater and a few constructions of the Roman era. Within the same area you may also see the ruins of the Christian basilica dedicated to Aghia Theotita («Saint Divinity»).

A wide range of hotels of all categories are available for accommodation; all of them are open from April or May (Easter period) until October.

Food is good and delicious in the fish taverns of the place, as well as in trendy restaurants with several dishes of innovative Greek and international cooking.

You will enjoy swimming, sunbathing and sea sports at the long sandy beach in front of the town. You may also catch the excursion boat, departing daily to Aghia Irini, where you will also find thermal springs, suitable for gynaecological problems.

A series of cultural activities, known as «Alasarnia» are organized in the town. Theater, concerts, visual arts’ exhibitions, folk dances, symposia and conferences, along with several competitions (cycling, chess etc) are some of the events taking place during summer.

A «nautical week» is another event organized in the town.

Two local feasts («panighyri») take place at the town, on the 29th of August in honor of Aghios Ioannis (St. John) and on the 8th of September, celebrating the Birth of Virgin Mary.

For health problems a local Medical Center and a drugstore is available in the settlement.

Access from the town of Kos is easy by public buses, with regular service, taxi and rented or private car and motorbikes. Taxis are available also from the village and, as Kardamena is at the middle of the village, they will get you everywhere.

If you have a yacht, the port of Kardamena is suitable both for mooring and and water and fuel supply.
