Thermes or Empros Thermes beach, Kos Island |
The beach of Thermes is situated at a distance of 10 kilometers southern to the town of Kos and 2 kilometers western to the beach of Aghios Focas. It is a pebbly beach with characteristic dark volcanic pebbles and warm seawater, due to the hot mineral water springs nearby. It is just for this that the beach was named after («thermes» in Greek means «hot»). The temperature of the water of the springs is high enough (40-45ο C) and contains high quantities of ions of Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sulphur, Chlorine, which make them suitable for the cure of rheumatism, arthritis and gynaecological diseases. The springs were discovered by the Italian archaeologist Laurenzi in 1934. |

The environment is not exceptionally nice, but the hot springs and the shallow warm seawater with the bubbles rising up from the bottom, make the beach quite popular. Also, the big rocks surrounding the beach make it quite impressive and create nice scenery for photos. The beach offers some facilities for swimming, sunbathing (umbrellas, sun beds) and cool refreshments. Health services are available at the nearby town of Kos (10 kilometers far away at the North). Access from the nearby town of Kos is easy by public bus, by taxi and by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
