Acharavi, Corfu |
| Acharavi is a coastal tourist resort, with some 650 permanent residents, situated at a distance of 37 kilometers far from the town of Corfu at the Northwest. Many traces of human activity in the past, in recent and more remote periods, are visible in the area. Up to now, the most ancient evidence are some burials, of the 6th-5th centuries b.C., that have been found close to Almyros. |

| You will also see the ruins of the Roman baths, showing very clearly that the island of Corfu was a resort even in this period and received many visitors. Don’t miss to visit the old church of Aghia Aikaterini (St Catherine) at the site of “Nissos”. If you feel like wandering around, you may visit the traditional villages of Ano Peritheia, at a distance of 15 kilometers at the Southeast, and Episkepsi, 6 kilometers at the South. Both are of the older villages on the island and maintain the local features, with excellent traditional buildings, representative of the local architectural style. If you are fan of ecological excursions, don’t miss to visit the beautiful lagoon of Antinioti, some 6 kilometers northeastern to Acharavi. The lagoon is a spot of attraction of many visitors, thanks to the great number of migrant birds found there, which makes the lagoon a very interesting biotope. At a distance of 1 nautical mile from the coast it is found a complex of small islets, called Spyridonissia. If you like caves, the area will not let you down. At a distance of 14 kilometers far from Acharavi you will find the very interesting cave of Grava. Hotels, studios and rooms to let are available for accommodation in the village and in the area around. For food and drink you will also find a lot of taverns of any taste, from sea food and fresh fish to interesting local dishes and Greek and international cooking. You will enjoy swimming at the beach of the village and the nearby beaches of Almyros, Aghios Spyridon and Kalamaki. There is also a water park at the beach of Acharavi. |

| If you are in the area in the period June-August, you may attend the cultural activities organized by the Municipality. There are also several local feasts (“panighyri”), following one another, which results to an atmosphere of continuous amusement. On the 8th of June, you may attend the “panighyri” in honor of Aghioi Theodoroi, at the village of Aghios Ilias (or Peritheia), found at a distance of 8 kilometers at the Northeast; another local feast is held in the same village on the 20th of July, in honor of Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elijah). The “panighyri” in honor of Panaghia Vlaherna on the 5th of July is also a spot of attraction for many people, locals as well as tourists. On the 26th of July there is the local feast in honor of Aghia Paraskevi at Louki, 5 kilometers eastern to Acharavi, whereas on the next day (the 27th of July), you may attend the “panighyri” in honor of Aghios Panteleimonas in the homonymous village, some 3 kilometers southern to Acharavi. Finally, don’t miss the great “panighyri”, taking place at Episkepsi, 6 kilometers southern to Acharavi, on the 15th of August in honor of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. In case of health problems there is a local Medical Center and a pharmacy. Access from the capital (Corfu, 37 kilometers far away) is possible by public buses (the green ones) running frequently, as well as by rented or private cars and motorbikes. Local taxis are also available in the village. |
