There are several places for sightseeing in the area, attracting numerous visitors. At a distance of one kilometer southwestern to the village, it is found the Holy Monastery of Pantocrator; the road that leads there passes through a marvelous wood of holm oaks.
One kilometer to the Southeast, at the village of Sgono, it is found the interesting Byzantine church of Panaghia (Holy Virgin), whereas at the village of Vouniatades, at a distance of some 4 kilometers far from Aghios Mattheos at the North, you may visit the church of Panaghia Odigitria, known also as Calamiotissa.
It is also worth visiting the Venetian castle of Gardiki, 3,5 kilometers far from the village at the South. Closer to the village, at the mountain Gamelion, there is the cave of Grava, with traces of human activity in prehistoric (Palaeolithic) times.
If you have a boat or a yacht, don’t miss to visit the small islets of Prassoudika and Pentenissia.
Accommodation is possible at the nearby beach of Paramonas.
For swimming you may go to the beach of Paramonas; the beach offers a great variety, as in parts it is sandy, pebbly and rocky, with a sandy seabed. The beach offers facilities for mooring of small boats at the site of “Vaghionaki”.
Apart from Paramonas, you may swim to the nearby beaches of Canouli, Chalicouna and at Prassoudi, a small, cute coastal tourist resort. If you are around in early August, don’t miss to attend the local feast (“panighyri”) in honor of the Transfiguration of Christ on the 6th of August.
In case of health problems a local Medical Center is available; in other cases of emergency a police station is available in the village. Access from the capital (Corfu, 23 kilometers far away) is possible by public buses (the green ones) with regular service; taxis are available both from Corfu and from the village, as there are also local taxis. |
