| The whole of the area is lovely: the town is located within a fertile plain full of olive trees, vineyards and vegetable gardens, with a small river flowing through it. The interesting part of the story is that this river is partly navigable: at its exit in Scala Potamou you will see several boats anchored there. The town has many churches worth seeing, as those of Aghios Arsenios, Aghioi Anargyri, Panaghia and Aghioi Theodoroi with a very interesting bell tower. There is also the Holy Monastery of “Kyra ton Angelon” (meaning “the Lady of the Angels” in Greek), dedicated to Virgin Mary. Don’t miss to visit the old saltpans and the small church of Aghios Ioannis; there is also a small port sheltering small fishing boats; the whole area is an interesting biotope. Accommodation is available in the town and in the broader area. Food is easy to find in the taverns of the area, where you may taste the local dishes, fresh fish and seafood, but also typical dishes of Greek cooking. You will enjoy swimming at the beach of Alykes (3 kilometers northern to the town) and at the beach of Buca, 3 kilometers at the Northeast, a few meters northern to the mouth of the river, to which the beach owes its name (“bocca” means “mouth” in Italian and this is the Venetian version of the word). |

| The visitors should not miss to see the “Barcarola”, a traditional event taking place in August, within the frame of the summer cultural activities organised in the town. Small boats navigate in the river, accompanying the trip with music and singing the homonymous songs. The spectacle is magnificent, especially in the evening, when the boats are lighted with small lights. A great local feast (“panighyri”) takes place on the 15th of August honor of Panaghia (Assumption of Virgin Mary). If you are on the island during the period of Carnival, don’t miss to attend the parade of the King of Carnival in Lefkimi, held on the last Sunday of Carnival. In case of health problems, a local Medical Center is available. There are also a Police Station, a Port authorities Station, and a Post Office. Access from the capital (Corfu, 41,5 kilometers) is easy by public bus (the green ones) and by rented or private car and motorbikes. Melikia, the port of Lefkimi has also a daily ship connection with Igoumenitsa in Epirus. |
