Paleokastritsa, Corfu Island

The locals will proudly introduce their village as the most beautiful on the island; and they are right! Palaeokastritsa is the greatest asset of this beautiful island. The picturesque coves and the fascinating colors give form a dramatic landscape, which has served as the natural scenery for several films, mainly of the Greek cinema of the 60s’ and 70s’.

There are many places worth seeing in the area: upon the hill of the village you may see the Holy Monastery of Panaghia Paleokastritissa, established in the 13th century; however, most of the buildings are dated to the 18th and 19th centuries, with very interesting architectural features of this period. You will also see the small museum of the Monastery with a considerable collection of icons of the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods, as religious artifacts, sacerdotal vestments, Gospels and other ritual books.

At a distance of 11 kilometers Northwestern to Paleokastritsa and one kilometer southern to the village of Krini, it is found the Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro, built by Michail Angelos when he established the Seigniory of Epirus, in order to protect the borders of his territory. Within the fortress you will see the interesting churches of Aghios Michail and Aghia Kyriaki. You will also have the chance to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea and, of course, take lots of pictures to remind you this beautiful place.

On your way to the town of Corfu, at the 13th kilometer, you will find the well known distillery “Mavromatis”, where you will taste “kumquat”, a local kind of citrus fruit, used to make sweets, jams and liquors of a special taste. You will also find ouzo and interesting local wines.

Once in the area, don’t miss to visit the scenic villages Doucades (5 kilometers at the Northeast), Lakones (6 kilometers northern to Palaeokastritsa), Makrades (9 kilometers at the Northwest). At Krini, some 10 kilometers northwestern to Palaeokastritsa, just before arriving to Angelokastro, you will also see the church of Aghios Nicolaos with a nice bell tower. It is also worth driving to the village of Lapades, at a distance of 5 kilometers at the East, within a marvelous verdant area and a magnificent beach just off the village, where you may also rent a boat for a romantic sailing around.

Hotels and rooms to let are available for accommodation within the settlement and in the broader area. The place is ideal for those liking to spend their holidays in a cosmopolitan environment with intense nightlife, but also with natural beauty. You will find plenty and excellent food, from fresh fish and local dishes to international cooking, in the sea front taverns of the village and in the area around. And, if you wish to have only a light meal and refreshment, the numerous snack bars will satisfy your appetite.

You will enjoy swimming and sunbathing at the beautiful beaches in front of the village, or in the area around (like at Lapades), which combine sand, pebbles and small stones with beautiful rocks and crystal clear very cool water. Cold water is one of the most characteristic features of the sea in the area; even in full summer, the sea never gets hot.

If you wish you may rent a small boat and start exploring the broader coastal area: you will sail up to “Petrokaravo” (meaning “the stone ship), or Kolouri, as its official name is. The locals will tell you many stories and legends about this small rock in the sea. Finally, if you like diving, a diving center is available both for beginners and for experts of the sport.

A series of cultural activities are organised in summer. If you are around during the Easter period you may take part to the local feast (“panighyri” in honor of Zoodochos Pighi (“the Spring of Life”), celebrated on Friday following Easter.

In case of health problems, a local Medical Center is available. There is also a Port authorities’ Station. Access from the capital (Corfu, 23,5 kilometers) is easy by public bus (the green ones), by taxi and by rented or private car and motorbikes. Excursion boats depart daily from the small port of the village for several coastal villages of the island. At the port you may also rent a boat for a more solitary and romantic short trip.
