The settlement is found one kilometer far from the sea and it counts some 650 permanent residents. The churches of Aghios Alypios and Aghia Kyriaki, within the village are interesting to see. It is worth visiting the protected biotope of the sea-turtle caretta–caretta. Practically, the coastal area to the East and South of Kalamaki, up to the beaches of Secania and Dafni as well as the opposite islet of Pelouso is reserved for the reproduction of caretta-caretta. Camping and staying overnight is strictly not allowed, as lights and noise disturb the turtles and affect egg laying. Luckily enough, the access to the beaches by car is not easy, which is good for the turtles and protects them enough from Man, often disturbing and sometimes dangerous for them. Food is good and plenty both in taverns of the area; you will enjoy fresh fish and seafood and a variety of local, Greek and international dishes. |
