If you like churches, you will find several of them worth seeing, both within the village and in the area around, as those of Aghia Paraskevi, Aghios Spyridon, Aghios Ioannis, Aghios Theodossios, Panaghia Miracolosa etc. At the northwestern edge of the village there is the Monastery of Aghios Andreas, whereas some 2,5 kilometers at the Southwest you will find the Monastery of Aghios Georgios ton Krimnon (“St George of the precipice”), built in the 16 th century. The Monastery has an impressive tower, made to protect it from the frequent pirate invasions of the past. Once in the area, don’t miss to drive to the small traditional village of Elies, some 7 kilometers far from Volimes at the Northeast, where you will see the scenic stone built houses and the impressive dry stonewalls of the farms and yards. Of course, you can’t miss visiting the famous cove of Navagio («the shipwreck”), at a distance of 3,5 kilometers western to the village. It is a small scenic cove, excellent for swimming, which has been named after the ship that ran aground at the beach in 1970 adding up to the beauty and the fame of this marvelous cove. You may also swim in any of the beaches of the Northern part of the island, as the distances are very short: the closest one (Navagio) is less than 3,5 kilometers far away, whereas the most “remote” (Makrys Gialos) is hardly more than 8,5 kilometers far from Volimes. |
