Xigia beach, Zakynthos Island |
The small pebbly beach of Xyngia is found some 20 kilometers northern to Zakynthos, northern to the beach of Alykes and southern to the beach of Makrys Gialos. The beach is not organised at all with no accommodation facilities; but being rather close to the tourist resorts of the northeastern coast, several alternatives for lodging are available in the broader area. One of the pros of the beach is that is not as crowded and noisy as the neighboring ones. Apart from the amazing sea and the peaceful atmosphere, the beach is well known for the submarine sulphur spring found at a nearby cave; due to this spring there is the characteristic, but not disgusting, smell in the air. As the locals say, swimming here has remedial qualities for arthritis and other similar diseases. They also pretend that swimming in the sulphureous water is very refreshing and relaxing even for healthy people. |

Leaving the beach it is worth visiting the mountainous village of Orthonies, where you may see the Monastery of Panaghia Spiliotissa (“Holy Virgin of the Cave), built in the 16 th century within a ravine and close to the cave where, according to tradition, it had been found the icon of Holy Virgin. In case of health problems, a local Medical Center is available at Katastari, at a distance of 8 kilometers southern to Xyngia. Access to the beach is easy, up to a point above the beach. You will leave your car there and after an easy walk down the path, you will arrive to this wonderful peaceful beach. The only problem is that on your way back the path is uphill! |
