The Museum of Post-Byzantine Art

Situated at the very center of the town of Zakynthos, at Solomos Square, the Museum of Post-Byzantine Art is housed in a nice two-storeyed neoclassic-style building, which was constructed after the destructive earthquake of 1953. The Museum contains a collection of excellent Byzantine icons, dated from the Byzantine times up to the 19 th century.

There are also wonderful wood carved icon screens, two of them preserved intact, frescoes dated back both to the period before the Venetian domination and later (17 th and 18 th centuries). You will also see sculptures of the Hellenistic period, as well as various artifacts of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine times. The most important exhibits are certainly the paintings of famous artists of the Cretan School (15 th- 17 th centuries), as well as the oil paintings or important local painters (Doxaras, Coutouzis, Cantounis).

Another important exhibit of the Museum is the detailed model of the town of Zakynthos as it was before the earthquake of 1953, a work of the important Zantiote John Manessis (1921-1989).

The Museum is interesting not only for the importance of the objects displayed, but also for its educational function: the way the objects are displayed and their variety give to the visitor the chance to perceive how art had been developed in the area of Eptanissa (Ionian Islands) after Constantinople had passed to the Ottomans, and how Occidental art and culture had influenced the local art and culture.
