Museum of Dionysios Solomos and of illustrious Zantiotes |
The Museum of Dionyssios Solomos is situated at the central square of Aghios Marcos. It is open every day from 9.00 a.m. to 14.00 p.m. The Museum was established in 1959 in a newly restored building and it opened to public in 1966, under the supervision of a private association of locals. The ground floor houses the skeletal remains of the poets Dionyssios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos, also of Zantiote origin. |

The first floor houses a rich collection of manuscripts of Solomos and of other poets, authors and artists; there is also an interesting and rich collection of portraits of notable people of the island. You will also see a considerable library, furniture from the period of British domination and a good collection of photos. The museum has also an interesting collection of paintings of the 18 th -19 th centuries, sculptures, pottery, metalwork and woodcarver objects. Finally, the Museum has an interesting e-library, where you will find a very rich bibliography on local history and other subjects. |
