Drakei, Samos Island

The village of Drakei is situated at the northwestern part of the island. As it happens with many villages of Samos, it owes its name to a person named Drakos, the first settler of the area. The area around the village is rocky and the soil infertile, but the environment is wonderful, with lush wild vegetation, steep rocks, excellent view of the open sea and a fantastic sunset; the same features that you will also find at the neighboring village of Kallithea. In terms of topography, the village belongs to Marathokambos, but administratively it makes part of the Municipality of Karlovasi. This unusual situation is a result of the fact that the village lacks a good road of access, partly due to the existence of the precipitous mountain of Kerkis in the area. Thus, the residents of the village chose to incorporate to the municipality of Karlovasi, aspiring to the construction of a short and good road which would connect their village with the seat of the municipality. The residents of Drakaeoi are occupied in olive tree cultivation and stockbreeding; in the past, part of their income came from the production of charcoal.

Western to the village it is found the site of Pyrgaki; according to local tradition at this place there used to be a “vigla”, that is to say a watch-tower from where they could inspect the sea up to the coast of Ikaria and Chios in the distance. It was from this place that the rest of the watch towers of the island were informed about the forthcoming invasions of pirates or, during the Greek National Revolution of 1821, of the Ottomans. One of the settlements belonging to the village of Drakaeoi is that of Aghios Isidoros, a settlement with only few permanent residents but well known for the traditional shipyards where they built wooden caiques and boats. Beside Aghios Isidoros it is situated the beach of Varsamo, a beach of breathtaking wild beauty, where the visitor may also find a lodging and enjoy nice local food in the traditional tavern.

For health problems, a pharmacy and a local Medical Center are available at Marathokambos, some 27 kilometers southeastern to the village.

Access to Drakaeoi is possible via Marathokambos by rented or private car and motorbikes.
