Ireon, Samos Island

Ireon is a coastal tourist settlement, which has not lost the scenic features of a typical old coastal village; it has a small port for mooring of small fishing and tourist boats. The village is situated at a distance of some 17 kilometers southwestern to the capital town of Samos and it is found very close to the famous archaeological site after which the village has been named. It counts some 500 permanent residents occupied mainly in tourism.

Many accommodation facilities are available in the settlement and in the broader area. The beach of the settlement is full of restaurants, fish taverns, cafés and bars, where the visitors can enjoy their meal or have their drink by the seaside; there is also an intense night life, thanks to the clubs and bars with Greek and foreign music.

Of course, once at Heraeon, you should not miss to visit the impressive homonymous archaeological site, where in antiquity stood the big temple of goddess Hera (Juno), an important worship place not only for Samos but for all the Ionian cities and people. Also, it is worth seeing the Sarakinis’ Tower, a very tall defensive tower, situated at the plain; the tower had been constructed in the 16th century by Nicolaos Sarakinis, an officer of the Ottoman fleet. Some 2 kilometers northeastern to Heraeon you will find Myloi (meaning “mills” in Greek), a tiny scenic village of the inland. Close to Myloi there is the country church of Aghios Makarios, a stone three-arched bridge and a big water basin that makes the landscape fascinating.

Swimming is possible at the beach in front of the settlement, as well as at the nearby beach of Papas; you may also catch one of the excursion boats which will get you to the lovely remote beaches of Mylona, Kyriakou, Kakorema, as well as to the beautiful islet of Samiopoula; all of them are secluded and quiet, with excellent very clean sea.

Many cultural events are organized in the place throughout summer; the most important among them are Heraea, a festival of ancient theater well known worldwide, as well as the summer music meetings of young people.

In case of any problem you should go to Pythagorio, 7 kilometers northeastern to Heraeon.

Access to Heraeon from the capital town of Samos is very easy by public buses running frequently; from Pythagorio you may also get here by taxi and of course you have always the choice of private means (car and motorbikes). If you have a small boat or yacht, the small port of Heraeon is available for mooring.
