Kosmadei, Samos Island |
The village of Kosmadaeoi is situated at the northern mountainside of Fterias, at a deviation of the road between Lekka and Kastania. The first settlers of the village came from the nearby village of Kastania and the village owes its name to a person named Kosmas, who is said to be the first to settle here. Today the residents live on cultivation of olive trees and viniculture; there are also a few stock-breeders. The main occupation of the people in the past was timber-felling and the production of charcoal. |

A mountainous dirt road, passing through a landscape of breathtaking beauty leads to the Monastery of Kakoperatos (or “Panaghia tou Hatzimanoli”), dedicated to Zoodochos Pege (Virgin, the Spring of Life); the monastery is situated at an altitude of some 600 meters. It is a small monastery found on a ravine leading to Seitani, within a fascinating wild natural environment. Very close to the monastery you will find a cave with a small church inside. At a distance of some 2 kilometers far from Kosmadaeoi it is found the old settlement of Nikoloudes, within an overgrown environment with excellent view. The settlement belongs to Kosmadaeoi and counts less than 30 permanent residents. |
