Κoumeika, Samos Island |
The village of Koumaeika is situated 13 southeastern to Marathokambos, with which it is connected via good roads, developing every day. Although very close to the sea, hidden as it is behind the hills, the village is almost invisible. It seems that it has been named after its first settlers, whose origin was from the town of Kyme at the island of Euboea. The residents live on agriculture, especially on olive tree cultivation. In the past, one of the main activities of the population was seafaring. |

Two kilometers far from Koumaeika it is found the beach of Balos, offering pretty good tourist facilities and attracting many visitors. Two more settlements belong to Koumaeika: Velanidia (meaning “oak” in Greek) and Ormos Koumaeikon (“cove of Koumaeika”); both settlements count some 22 permanent residents in total. In case of health problems, a pharmacy and a local Medical Center are available at Marathokambos, some 8 kilometers southwestern to the village. Access to the village from Marathokambos is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
