Mavratzei, Samos Island

Mavrantzei is a scenic mountainous village, situated at a deviation of the circular road leading from the town of Samos to Karlovasi, via Pythagorio. The village is found some 19 kilometers far from the town of Samos at the Southwest, within a beautiful area with lush vegetation, mainly of pine and olive trees, with several caves and other natural sightseeing. In the past the village was called Gaitankioi or Gaitanides, after the name of a landowner of the area whose name was Gaitanos. Later on, it was named after a more recent settler whose name was Mavrantzas.

In older times the village had a lot of pottery workshops which, along with the production of Karlovasi covered the needs of the whole island in ceramic vessels. Today some workshops are still working, but now for the tourist market only. The village counts some 400 permanent residents, living on tourism, on olive trees’ cultivation and on pottery.

If you wish to enjoy calmness and avoid the crowded beaches and tourist resorts you may choose this village for your staying; the place offers some accommodation facilities, the traditional taverns will offer you gorgeous food and in the old cafés of the village you will enjoy your ouzo along with nice local appetizers.

For swimming you have to go to the neighboring beaches of Pythagorio area, some 10 kilometers far from the village at the Southeast.

Once at Mavrantzaei you may see the church of Aghios Georgios (St. George) and the Historic Museum of the area, housed in the building of the Elementary School. The museum has a nice collection of photos presenting the history of the village and of the broader area. At a distance of 2,5 kilometers southeastern to the village it is worth seeing the Holy Monastery of Timios Stavros (“the Holy Cross”), founded in the 16th century by the monk Nilos Latinos; the Catholicon of the monastery dated in the 19th century has a nicely elaborated wood carved icon screen, the pulpit and the Episcopal throne, also wood carved. On the mountain above the village you may visit the interesting caves of Trypiovrahos and Kaplanotrypa.

Two local religious feasts (“panighyri”) take place here; the first is celebrated in honor of Aghios Georgios (St. George) in the village and the second takes place at the Monastery of Holy Cross on the 14th of September.

In case of any problem you should go to Pythagorio, 10 kilometers northeastern to the village.

Access to the village from the capital or from Pythagorio is easy by taxi, as well as by rented or private car and motorbikes.
